El ámbar es una sustancia noble y de reconocido valor en todas las culturas que han tenido acceso a él. Las propiedades del ámbar son muchas y muy diversas, así como sus usos. Vodka de ámbar: esta bebida se ha utilizado durante muchos años y se le atribuyen propiedades curativas de todo tipo. Propiedades esotéricas: existen miles de prácticas para atraer la buena suerte y realizar conjuros de diferente tipo, como llevar una joya de ámbar como amuleto, o sumergir una pieza de ámbar en el agua del té antes de beberlo. Cómo hacer un amuleto de ágata. / How to make an amulet with agate.

El ágata es nuestra piedra del mes, así vamos a aprovechar sus propiedades para hacer un amuleto protector. Se trata de un wedja, un amuleto de origen egipcio. El objetivo de este amuleto que vamos a hacer es protegernos contra las energías negativas y los miedos más frecuentes, como podrían ser la enfermedad, la pobreza o la muerte. La variedad de ágata que vamos a emplear es el ágata roja, ya que favorece la longevidad. Incluiremos en él las palabras “vida, prosperidad, salud”, la que sus jeroglíficos se empleaban a menudo en antiguos amuletos de Egipto. ¿Qué necesitamos? Ágata roja. Lapislázuli. Salvia seca. Una llave de la vida egipcia o ankh, plateado o de plata. Un trozo de pergamino alargado y de unos 5 cm de ancho. Un rotulador negro de acetato. Una cinta o cordel de color rojo. Una bolsa de seda roja. Una tira de cuero negro.

Agata is our stone of the month, so we are going to seize its wonderful properties to make an amulet for protection. This kind of amulet is called wedja, and comes from ancient Egypt. The purpose of this amulet is to protecto ourselves against negative energies and frequent fears such as diseases, poverty or death. The variesty of agate that we are going to use is the red agate, because it favours longevity. In the amulet, we will include the words “life, prosperity and healt”, as their hieroglyphic were often represented in ancient Egyptian amulets. What do we need? Red agate. Lapis lazuli. Dry sage. A silver Egyptian ankh. A elongated piece of parchment, 5 cm of widht more or less. A black permanent marker. A red cord. A red silken bag. A black leather ribbon.

Procedimiento para hacer el amuleto: Durante la luna nueva, coger el ágata, el lapislázuli, la salvia y la llave de la vida y ponerlos dentro de la bolsa de seda. Utilizar el rotulador permanente para escribir en el pergamino las siguientes palabras:  “Vida, prosperidad, salud”. Enrollar el pergamino y atarlo con el cordel rojo para después introducirlo en la bolsa con los demás objetos.  Cerrar la bolsa y atar la tira de cuero alrededor de ésta.   Cerrar la tira de cuero para poder llevar el colgante alrededor del cuello. Proccedure to make the amulet: In a night of new moon, take the agate, the lapis lazuli, the sage and the ankh and put them all together into the silken bag. Use the permanent marker to write the following words in the parchment: “Life, prosperity, health”. Roll up the parchment and tie it with the red cord to keep it closed. Then, put it inside the bag with the rest of the components.  Close the bag and tie the leather ribbon around it.  Tie the ribbon to wear the pendant around your neck. Helena de Troya ha sido considerada un icono de la belleza desde la Antigüedad. A caballo entre la Historia y la mitología, todas las historias sobre ella hablan de su atractivo y su poder de seducción. Como parte de su leyenda, en el museo Pushkin de Moscú se encuentran expuestas dos diademas conocidas como “las Joyas de Helena”. ¿Cuál es el origen de estas joyas? ¿De qué están hechas? ¿Pertenecieron de verdad a esta enigmática y legendaria mujer?

Helen of Troy has been considered as a beauty icon since Antiquity. Between the History and the myth, stories told about her always refer to her beauty and her charm. As part of her legend, Pushkin Museum (Moscow) exhibits two gold diadems known as “the Jewels of Helen". What is the origin of these jewels? What are they made of? Did they really belong to this enigmatic and legendary woman?

El personaje de Helena se consideraba hija de Zeus y contaba en su haber con conquistas tan reseñables como Teseo o Aquiles. Sin embargo, es su seducción a Paris, príncipe de Troya, la que, según se cuenta, desencadenó una guerra. Cuando Paris, ayudado por Afrodita – a quien favoreció en su famoso juicio-, rapta a Helena, se desencadenaron, según diferentes fuentes, los conflictos narrados por Homero en La Ilíada. Sin embargo, esta historia fue considerada como una leyenda durante muchos siglos… Es en 1873 cuando el pruso Heinrich Schliemann, comerciante y arqueólogo obsesionado con la historia de esta civilización, encuentra en Hisarlik (Turquía) los restos estratificados de un asentamiento ya olvidado, que se había mantenido activo durante más de 4.000 años. Desde el Neolítico hasta la época de Roma. En su excavación de este lugar, encontró los restos de la Troya Homérica, además de una gran cantidad de oro, que bautizó como el Tesoro de Príamo - rey de Troya- . Como parte de este tesoro, dio con una gran jarra de plata donde se encontraban, entre otras cosas, dos espectaculares diademas de oro. Éstas fueron bautizadas como “la Joyas de Helena.” Schliemann se las entregó a su mujer, Sofía, que se fotografió con ellas.

Helen’s figure was considered to be Zeus’ daughter and had conquested noteworthy héroes such as Theseus or Achilles. However, it was her love story  with Paris, prince of Troy, the one that unleashed a war. When Paris, helped by Aphrodite – who was favoured by Paris in his judgement-, takes Helen and triggers, according to dofferent sources, the conflicts that were told by Homer in The Iliad. However, this story was considered as a legend for centuries… Finally, in 1873, Prussian dealer and archaealogist Heinrich Scliemann, who was obsessed with this civilization, found in Hisarlik (Turkey) stratified rests of a forgotten settlement that had lasted for more than 4,000 years. From Neolithc until Roman Empire. In that excavation, he found the rests of Homeric Troy, as well as a huge amount of gold that he called Priam’s Treasure - King of Troy-. As part of this treasure, he found a great silver jar where, among other things, he found two spectacular gold diadems. These jewels were called “the Jewels of Helen”. Schliemann gave them to his wife Sophia, who was pictured with them.

Más tarde se supo que este tesoro se encontraba en un estrato anterior a la época en la que debieron vivir Príamo y Helena. Sin embargo, el nombre de estas joyas – así como del tesoro – quedó instituido para siempre.

Later, it was known that this treasure was found in a earlier stratum than the one identified with Priam and Helen’s time. However, the name of these jewels – and the whole treasure- has already been instituted.

Comenzamos con la que será nuestra piedra del mes de abril. En este caso hemos elegido el ágata, por ser una de las piedras relacionadas con el primaveral signo de Tauro. El ágata es una piedra preciosa que fue encontrada por primera vez en la zona siciliana del río Dirillo. Entonces, este río se denominaba Achates, de ahí el nombre dado a esta piedra. Tal y como indica esta procedencia, se trata de una roca de origen volcánico. ¿Cómo se forma? Al ser expulsada la lava del volcán, el contacto con la superficie hace que se enfríe más rápidamente por la parte exterior que la interior. En la parte interna, quedan burbujas de gas que se enfrían y solidifica de manera más lenta. En este proceso y, dependiendo del modo de enfriamiento, se producen diferentes combinaciones de materiales, dando lugar a diferentes rocas. En el caso del ágata, es necesario que soluciones calientes de sílice en forma de magma se filtren en las cavidades de rocas volcánicas y que éstas se depositen por capas. La primera de estas capas es la que va a  llegar a formar el ágata. Los principales yacimientos de ágatas se encuentran en Madagascar, India, Artigas (Uruguay), Argentina y Brasil. Esta gema fue relacionada con la ciencia, y venerada por los antiguos. En India, se utilizaba para curar las enfermedades de los ojos, en Egipto, para las picaduras de escorpión y de araña. Tanto aquí como en la antigua ciudad de Aleppo se emplearon para esculpir los ojos de las representaciones de los dioses. Según la tradición islámica, esta piedra preciosa tiene carácter protector. Por ello, es tradicional llevar un anillo de este material que proteja de problemas y proporcione longevidad. El ágata puede encontrarse en diferentes variedades. Las más importantes son el ágata verde, el ágata con bandas y el ágata negra.

Agate is a precious stone that was found for the first time in the Sicillian area of river Dirillo. Then, that river was called Achates. It is from this word where the name “agate” came from. As this place, agate is a volcanic stone. It is formed when lava leaves a volcano and its surface cools faster than the inside. In the inner part, bubbles of lava last, and cool and solidify slower. During this process and, depending on the way it cools down, different rocks are formed. Agate’s formations is due to warm silica that seeps into cavities forming layers. First layer will be the one that finally will form agate. Main deposits of agate are located in Madagascar, India, Artigas (Uruguay), Argentina and Brazil. This gem has been connected to science and ancient civilizations have venerated it. In India it was used to heal eyes diseases and, in Egypt, for spiders and scorpions’ bites. As well as in Egypt, the ancient people from Aleppo used it to sculpt the eyes of god’s images. According to Islamic tradition, this precious stone has protective characteristics. That is why it is traditional to wear a ring made of agate to be protected against problems and provide longevity. Agate can be found in different varieties. Most important ones are banded agate, green agate and black agate.
