Cómo hacer un amuleto de ágata. / How to make an amulet with agate.

El ágata es nuestra piedra del mes, así vamos a aprovechar sus propiedades para hacer un amuleto protector. Se trata de un wedja, un amuleto de origen egipcio. El objetivo de este amuleto que vamos a hacer es protegernos contra las energías negativas y los miedos más frecuentes, como podrían ser la enfermedad, la pobreza o la muerte. La variedad de ágata que vamos a emplear es el ágata roja, ya que favorece la longevidad. Incluiremos en él las palabras “vida, prosperidad, salud”, la que sus jeroglíficos se empleaban a menudo en antiguos amuletos de Egipto. ¿Qué necesitamos? Ágata roja. Lapislázuli. Salvia seca. Una llave de la vida egipcia o ankh, plateado o de plata. Un trozo de pergamino alargado y de unos 5 cm de ancho. Un rotulador negro de acetato. Una cinta o cordel de color rojo. Una bolsa de seda roja. Una tira de cuero negro.

Agata is our stone of the month, so we are going to seize its wonderful properties to make an amulet for protection. This kind of amulet is called wedja, and comes from ancient Egypt. The purpose of this amulet is to protecto ourselves against negative energies and frequent fears such as diseases, poverty or death. The variesty of agate that we are going to use is the red agate, because it favours longevity. In the amulet, we will include the words “life, prosperity and healt”, as their hieroglyphic were often represented in ancient Egyptian amulets. What do we need? Red agate. Lapis lazuli. Dry sage. A silver Egyptian ankh. A elongated piece of parchment, 5 cm of widht more or less. A black permanent marker. A red cord. A red silken bag. A black leather ribbon.

Procedimiento para hacer el amuleto: Durante la luna nueva, coger el ágata, el lapislázuli, la salvia y la llave de la vida y ponerlos dentro de la bolsa de seda. Utilizar el rotulador permanente para escribir en el pergamino las siguientes palabras:  “Vida, prosperidad, salud”. Enrollar el pergamino y atarlo con el cordel rojo para después introducirlo en la bolsa con los demás objetos.  Cerrar la bolsa y atar la tira de cuero alrededor de ésta.   Cerrar la tira de cuero para poder llevar el colgante alrededor del cuello. Proccedure to make the amulet: In a night of new moon, take the agate, the lapis lazuli, the sage and the ankh and put them all together into the silken bag. Use the permanent marker to write the following words in the parchment: “Life, prosperity, health”. Roll up the parchment and tie it with the red cord to keep it closed. Then, put it inside the bag with the rest of the components.  Close the bag and tie the leather ribbon around it.  Tie the ribbon to wear the pendant around your neck. Comenzamos con la que será nuestra piedra del mes de abril. En este caso hemos elegido el ágata, por ser una de las piedras relacionadas con el primaveral signo de Tauro. El ágata es una piedra preciosa que fue encontrada por primera vez en la zona siciliana del río Dirillo. Entonces, este río se denominaba Achates, de ahí el nombre dado a esta piedra. Tal y como indica esta procedencia, se trata de una roca de origen volcánico. ¿Cómo se forma? Al ser expulsada la lava del volcán, el contacto con la superficie hace que se enfríe más rápidamente por la parte exterior que la interior. En la parte interna, quedan burbujas de gas que se enfrían y solidifica de manera más lenta. En este proceso y, dependiendo del modo de enfriamiento, se producen diferentes combinaciones de materiales, dando lugar a diferentes rocas. En el caso del ágata, es necesario que soluciones calientes de sílice en forma de magma se filtren en las cavidades de rocas volcánicas y que éstas se depositen por capas. La primera de estas capas es la que va a  llegar a formar el ágata. Los principales yacimientos de ágatas se encuentran en Madagascar, India, Artigas (Uruguay), Argentina y Brasil. Esta gema fue relacionada con la ciencia, y venerada por los antiguos. En India, se utilizaba para curar las enfermedades de los ojos, en Egipto, para las picaduras de escorpión y de araña. Tanto aquí como en la antigua ciudad de Aleppo se emplearon para esculpir los ojos de las representaciones de los dioses. Según la tradición islámica, esta piedra preciosa tiene carácter protector. Por ello, es tradicional llevar un anillo de este material que proteja de problemas y proporcione longevidad. El ágata puede encontrarse en diferentes variedades. Las más importantes son el ágata verde, el ágata con bandas y el ágata negra.

That is why it is traditional to wear a ring made of agate to be protected against problems and provide longevity. Agate can be found in different varieties. Most important ones are banded agate, green agate and black agate.
